Solo Voices: Music of J.S. Bach and Beethoven
Trinity Episcopal Cathedral • 121 West 12th Street, Davenport, IAmapwith readings from John Donne’s Holy Sonnets and Meditations
The first half of the program commingles of music and poetry. Excerpts from J. S. Bach’s Solo Cello Suites Nos. 5 and 6 will be interspersed with readings from John Donne’s Holy Sonnets and Meditations. This first segment carries the subtitle “Toward the Infinite—Transcendent Music, Transcendent Faith.”
Beethoven’s Piano Sonata Op. 106 makes up the second half. Beethoven quipped in 1818 that this sonata “will keep the pianists busy when it is played fifty years hence.” He underestimated: two hundred years later, the sonata remains a source of fascination to pianists and the musical public for its extravagant difficulty and beauty.
This concert will take place at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Davenport.
